Holy Matcha: San Diego’s Newest (& Cutest!) Hot Spot

I’ve seen this place all over Instagram, and was instantly captivated by the tropical wallpaper, pink and green color palette, and palpable femininity that filled every corner of this trendy tea room. I knew that I just had to check it out, so I dragged Kuinise along to accompany me on my visit to Holy Matcha. He was a little reluctant to try Matcha for the first time (in fact he kept  mistakenly calling it ‘Mochi’). Some of you may share his hesitation on this green libation, and might be wondering ‘What exactly is Matcha?’

Matcha literally translates to “powdered tea” and is basically a compound made with the entire tea leaf. Typically with conventional green tea, the leaf is infused into hot water and then discarded. Matcha boasts numerous health benefits including boosting metabolism, burning calories, calming the mind and body, and is loaded with antioxidants that aid in preventing disease and lowering blood sugar and cholesterol. Matcha lovers rave about its ability to increase energy without the drowsiness that often follows a caffeine buzz. The staff at Holy Matcha, are matcha enthusiasts, who don’t just limit their love for the bright green powder to tea, but also sprinkle it on donuts, and mix it into soft serve for a unique treat. The menu is small but mighty, highlighting just about 7 items that will entice your taste buds. We tried the avocado toast, matcha latte, matcha lemonade, premium matcha tea (think of this as matcha ‘straight-up’ if you will), and of course the strawberry and matcha donuts. The matcha tastes just like traditionally brewed green tea, but admittedly, the texture does take some getting used to.

I don’t know if a more ‘instagram-worthy’ spread ever existed, but this was almost too pretty to eat! (…I said almost) The marble table, pink plates , and environmentally sustainable floral straws were the icing on the cake! How adorable is that matcha heart both in the latte and sitting alongside the donuts? This place is all about those subtle details!

This was the most delicious avocado toast I’ve. Ever. Had. (and I’ve had my fair share!) Complete with red pepper flakes and sea salt, it was the perfect combination of creamy and spicy. I can’t wait to try to make this at home!

The matcha lemonade was a refreshing surprise! They perfectly blended club soda, their made in-house lemonade, fresh lemon, and mint. This was the perfect elixr to wash down the avocado toast….and it’s sooooo pretty!

Holy Matcha is sure to become the ‘Next Big Thing’ here in San Diego. If you’re interested in expanding your palate, you should definitely give matcha a try. Even if you aren’t brave enough to venture into the newest tea trend, there are things on the menu that you will enjoy. Not to mention, this interior is a girl’s dream come true (judging by the number of ladies there with their boyfriends trying to get that perfect photo for Instagram!) I can’t wait to see what exciting things are yet to come from this amazing team, and unforgettable space. Unfortunately, they do not currently offer large group or special event packages, but couldn’t you just imagine hosting a bridal shower here?!

Stop in and see for yourself! They are open daily from 10am-7pm.
